my notebook boots up till the log on screen appears then when i try to log on it loggs off immediately tried to log on in safe mode the same thing happens what could be the solution?

I originally misunderstood your post, and thought your computer was booting into Safe Mode everytime – but if the problem is that it will not allow you to log in at all, I would use the XP cd to go into the Repair screen and run a chkdsk /r

Sounds like what happens if you have not registered Windows XP. Go to Microsoft and validate your OS.

    If XP does not allow u in safe mode then go to system tools and restore system to a previous state / insert XP setup cd/dvd and do the same or if u feel u are a bit more advanced (mind this words, else u may make it a mess) try to run repair to overcome this issue, remember repair (not the console repair, a bit more hard) can make XP as previous state without getting negative impact and u can gain the same settings as u had before.

    maybe something from your system files are missing. so maybe you need to copy back the system file from your xp cd into the location and that might be the fix.. another way is to install xp ontop your original xp
