 Windows XP maintaining performance levels

I'm looking to develop a process that will help to maintain the performance levels of the windows xp machines in our enterprise. I support about 250 windows xp computers, so ideally i'd like to automate this process. often times users complain that their pcs are "slow." often times i will just image a new computer and switch out their old one. however, this is less than ideal as this process can take quite a bit of time. any insight would be greatly appreciated !
