I have Windows XP Service Pack 3. Chkdsk /f results in the following error message: "The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)" When I respond with "Y," the drive is not checked on restart. I have also attempted chkdsk /f in safe mode with the same results. In have contacted software manufacturers' tech support with no success, and I have replaced the hard drive.

As an alternative you can boot off a Windows XP disk and go to the repair console and run it there.
In my CD tool kit, I have a dvd disk with an OS that runs using ram only. You could also use a USB stick to hold the OS. When booting this way the hard disk is not used, so the checkdisk and defrag utilities can be run without having the problem you are experiencing.
It’s was made using a program called BartPE. If you need to know more about BartPE this is the wiki link.
