Windows Vista compatibility with Microsoft Office 2003

I'm working with a Windows Vista system on my laptop and I used to have Microsoft Office installed on my laptop (can't remember the version); however, I let someone use my laptop and they removed Microsoft Office from my laptop and now everything (word processor docs, spreadsheets, etc.) is being controlled by Open Office 3.0. I cannot open the old Excel spreadsheets that I previously created with whatever version of Microsoft Office I had previously without formatting problems. My question is this: What would happen if I tried to load another version of Office (Microsoft Office 2003 Student and Teachers Edition)onto my laptop? That version is on my home PC, and it's the only install CD I have to restore Office to my laptop. Any complications I can expect?

While difficult to predict a problem, I offer three solutions that will enable you to restart from scratch.
I advise to follow the two solutions in chronological order.

Solution 1:
Go to Start Menu.
Go to Control Panel.
Go to Programs.
Go to Programs & Features.
Now, verify that MS Office is truly uninstalled.
EXPLANATION:
Solution 1 will act as a checkmark, allowing you to proceed to Solution 2 or 3 if MS Office is truly gone.

Solution 2 (you may skip, as it can be dangerous if you do not know how to correctly alter the registry)
Press Window+R. This opens up "Run".
Type in "regedit" (which stands for "Edit Registry".
On the top menu, go to "Edit".
Go to "Find".
Type in keywords like 'Microsoft Office' or 'Microsoft Office 2003'.
Then, press "Find Next".
Afterwards, it'll find registers associated with MS Office. Delete these (if you are certain they are associated).
Press F3 (this will find the next value).
Do this until all MS Office associated registers are deleted.
EXPLANATION:
Solution 2 will make it as if MS Office was never installed in your computer, enabling you to reinstall it again.
Proceed by doing so, then follow Solution 3.

Go to Start Menu.
Go to Control Panel.
Go to Programs.
Go to Default Programs.
Go to "Associate File Type or Protocol with a Program"
EXPLANATION:
Solution 3 will permit you to alter the default programs file types are being referred to. As a result, you can change the fact that the OpenOffice Suite is opening all of your office documents, and instead refer them back to your MS Office Suite.
