Hi, Some of the services in my P3 winxp laptop fails to run, for eg, RPA service and windows installer, it says it fails to load because of some dependent services are not started. I went to services.msc frm cmd promt and tried to start these services and other services too but in vein. Because of this voice service got disabled, IE is not working, Outlook Express is not working, even copy paste function of windows is not working. I can browse thru mozzila and install the software. but cant move the files. It was not like this before untill I touched the services. I stopped some services thinking they are unnecessary and might be contacting some remote unknown servers. next day when I again started my pc I was in trouble. even I am not able to contact windows update becasue it need IE. when I try to download IE it says already u have new version installed. I dont want to reinstall my OS. I used msconfig utility also to start the services, but no effect. please advice how can i solve this problem Regards, Mayur

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The first question I’d ask (or look at) is did you “Stop” the services, or set them to “Manual” or “Disabled”?

If they are simply stopped, a reboot usually addressed the problem. If you have disabled them, then you’ll need to get in and set them back to “automatic”.

Hello, If you know what services you changed you should be able to work backward by setting those services back to their original state and reboot. This should start those services plus their dependent ones. Good luck!

i disabled them manually, i rebooted my pc but still the same problem persists, i did last known gud configuration but still same status, Since I was not knowing that it will harm so much and if something wrong i can again go back and change the settings, I forgot the order in which i did that, i tried all permutation combination to enable those, i tried looking into services propereties and tried to see which all are the dependend services i shud start first , I tried to start those dependent services but they were not starting, giving errors. second day was more horrible, when i restarted my pc, i found that I was not able to see the properties of services , i mean when i tryying to open properties it was not opening. also advance services tab was BLANK. i was able to see only standard services. I was not having restore point also so that i cud restore the previous config. my IE is also not wworking which is mendaroty for Windows update. I dont haave repair disk also. but my OS is under warranty period so I think i shud be able to update windows but i am not able to reach microsoft site. Please let me know any more info you want on this. can we fix this up.?

You mentioned you do not have a repair disk. By this do you mean your Windows install CD? If your computer is a brand-name you may have a recovery partition on your hard drive for reinstalling the OS. Check the documentation that came with your laptop. From what you're saying you may have to reinstall Windows. You also said you didn't have a restore point. Have you checked System Restore? There may have been an automatic restore point created before you made the changes. If you are not able to access System Restore in Normal Mode, try Safe Mode. When you go into Safe Mode you should get a prompt asking you if you want to use System Restore. Something to bear in mind for future reference, is that it's a good idea to do full system backups regularly, or at least before and after a major system change or application install. Norton Ghost and Dantz Retrospect Backup are two programs that I am aware of that do full system backups.

Your copy and paste issues may be caused by a junkware program that is being installed through legitamate programs. I had an issue with Mozilla not allowing copy and paste, and then I researched it on their forum, and found http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=330825&sid=5392f45385ebe099de1dc1e4b34c152c follow the instructions from that post, and most likely your issues with copy and paste will be rectified.

I suggest abandoning your efforts to rollback your changes (turning on services you thought would correct the problem) and use XP's System Restore facility. There will be AT LEAST ONE restore point that can be used to establish XP as it was prior to your changes to the services. It may restore a version prior to other significant changes you made, yet it has this advantage over reintslling the OS - you will forego changes introduced since that restore point ONLY, not ALL changes as the OS reinstall would. A much less drastic response. Your copy/paste will either work (your actions introduced the problem) or will be extant (undesired sw unkonwinly installed.) In the latter case, follow the previously offered advice for that matter.

Since I am not able to change the service status, I would like to go for system restore. As I have previously said that I have not created any system restore point, but frm last message in this thread I came to know that XP automatically creates a system restore. I trust on that and want to know the procedure how to restore it without CDs. I dont care abt backup since I have already have it in my thumb drive thru dos command copy paste. i just want to rollback my laptop to last known gud configuraiton.

Hello, First off, right-click on 'My Computer' and select Properties => System Restore tab and verify that the checkbox marked 'Turn Off System Restore' is NOT checked. If it is checked then system restore is not running and your SOL. Assuming it is turned ON, go to Start => Programs => Accessories => System Tools => System Restore. This will start a wizard which will prompt you to answer some basic questions and will walk you through the restore process. When it prompts you to select a date from which you want to restore your system, be sure to select a date preceeding the time when your problems started. Probably best to go back as far as a week before the problems started to make sure you don't restore a corrupt configuration. Good luck!

Copy paste problem got solved as per the method suggested by PATRAND . Lot of thanks to him. there are two RPC Services RPC and RPC locator, I fully agree that one of these RPC service was not running earlier, but I disabled other RPC service too from properties. Second thing, in my computer properties > Restore option, Turnoff restore was not checked. I tried Restoring Backup. I got this error. "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." I restarted laptop but again same error. I think because of the services issue restore service is also not able to run. One option suggested earlier was to do restore thru safe mode. Please let me k now how t o go to safe mode in Winxp P3 so that I can try that also. Can anyone let me know that whatever goofup i did with services, If i again want to start services, is there any procedure to start services one by one, like first this service shud be started, then only this one then this , then this,..etc.. like a step by step services so that first dependent services will get start then parent. I am guessing this because it cud be like one key open the door then there we find other key to open next door. sommething likee that.. I know it cud be foolish to think likee that but since I have not played with the internal componets of windows and did whaatevere was alloweed to do by microsoft and options were there so definitely I can perform the reverse also. This all happened because i stopped the services frm properties. i mean put them disable and apply changes in properties etc. IS THERE ANY WAY THRU DOS TO RESUME SERVICES IF I AM NOT ABLE TO RESUME THEM THRU GUI?

I tried as suggested by Mr.Railroad to run system restore from Safe mode, I went to safe mode by selecting startup option in safemode by msconfig utility. Just after booting in safe mode it asked me yes to continue or no to run system restore. I hit NO. It gave me same error message which I got in normal mode. It says system restore is not able to protect your computer.please restart your computer and try again. I restarted and tried again but same error. To be more specific, when I am to start RPC Service,I am getting error no. 1058 - The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled device associated with it. I cannot go into its properties, nothing pops up when i do double click and when i right click the services annd then properties. When I am trying to start other services like windows installer, I am getting error message 1068 - the dependency service or group faileed to start. Is it possible frm winndows registry to enable servicees? Waitining for your advice. Many thanks for all of you who are trying t o troubleshoot this problem.

Here's the solution from MS: When you try to start the Remote Procedure Call service manually, the service does not start. You may receive an error message that is similar to the following: Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. CAUSE This behavior may occur if the Remote Procedure Call service is disabled for the hardware profile that you are currently using. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, follow these steps. Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.1. Restart your computer by using the Safe Mode startup option. To do this, follow these steps:a. Restart your computer, and when the Boot menu appears, press F8. b. Under Windows Advanced Options Menu, select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER. c. When the Boot menu appears again with the words "Safe Mode" displayed at the bottom of the menu, select the operating system that you want to start, and then press ENTER. 2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 3. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetHardware ProfilesCurrentSystemCurrentControlSetEnumROOTLEGACY_RPCSS 4. On the File menu, click Export. 5. In the File name box, type a name for the registry file. 6. In the Save in list, click the location where you want to save the registry file, and then click Save. 7. Right-click LEGACY_RPCSS, click Delete, and in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box, click Yes. Note Do not delete any one of the following subkeys that may be found under the ROOT subkey:? MS_L2TPMINIPORT ? MS_NDISWANIP ? MS_PPPOEMINIPORT ? MS_PPTPMINIPORT ? MS_PSCHEDMP ? MS_PTIMINIPORT 8. Exit Registry Editor. 9. Restart your computer by using the Restart Windows Normally startup option.
