What you really need to implement Direct Access is a 2008 R2 server with 2 network cards (1 for the internet, and one for the intranet), Client machine(s) running Windows 7, and you must be using IPv6 and put in place IP security policies. If you have all this you shouldn't have a problem setting it up.
The following articles should help you out; the first two are technical overviews and general information about Direct Access and the third is a step-by-step guide to using the installation wizard.
