Answer Wiki:
Both platforms can give you a good carrier. The trick is to find the platform that you like and can be passionate about. If you don't like working with Linux than a carrier working with Linux probably isn't the correct solution for you. *************************************** Windows currently has about 85%- 90% of the general computing market. So going just by those numbers it would seem that focusing on Windows would be your best choice. However, Linux has a much larger presence in web servers, and Macintosh/Apple has a good share of the graphics and design market. I agree with the previous answer, part of what will determine your success in any venture is your passion and enjoyment of what you are doing. Choose an industry or application (such as bio-medical or graphic design) first, then focus on the applicable technology. Good Luck! -Flame ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Being a college student myself, I have found that the best method for success is to be versatile. Knowing both will take some extra time, but marketshares are getting tossed around. I would say that one must at least familiarize themselves with Windows, Linux, and Unix to stay up to date with the industry. For example, from a strictly I.T. perspective, at my company, we use UNIX, LINUX, and WINDOWS Servers because each has a particular suit that it fits best with. I am responsible to know all three, and I imagine that this is a common case within many companies and for many I.T. professionals. Hope this helps! -Schmidtw

I agree with Schmidtw. You might want to specialize in some platform, but it is recommended to have some basic knowledge on other platforms as well. We also have some Windows , some Linux, and some Solaris servers, and unfortunately many of our team members are not able to deal with our unix servers.
