Windows 7 Hanging on Shutdown

My Boss has a new Fujitsu LifeBook T900. It has Windows 7 Pro 64bit, 8GB of RAM & 320GB Hard Drive.

The machine works great except for one problem. It will constantly freeze when shutting down.

The funny thing is, if you close the lid while it is hung, the machine will go to sleep. When you re-open the lid it will wake up and continue shutting down successfully.

I believe I have tracked the issue down to the fingerprint authentication software, though I may be wrong on that.

I would very much like this laptop to be in working condition for my boss. Any thoughts, tips or tricks would be appreciated. If you need any more info, please let me know.

Did you try and disable the fingerprint software and then test? If it is running as a service, change startup to disabled andf then test. You can also use sysinternals autoruns and see how it loads. Autoruns is also good for selectively stopping items from loading in order to test/troubleshoot

    Hi Spadasoe, Thank you for your reply. Yes, I've disabled the service before. However, when I do that, the machine will boot up but nothing will appear at the login screen. (e.g the "tiles" you click on to represent the users will not appear) so I am unable to login to the machine. If I uninstall the software, I can boot up and login no problem. I'll give that sysinternals a try and see what else I can come up with. I was on the phone with Fujitsu tech support earlier today, but as I suspected, they just advised to be perform a system restore, which would of course, wipe out all my Boss's data.

    When Windows 7 is under heavy load, u may encounter it stops responding when shut down the computer or put the computer into Sleep. Try run wmpnetwk.exe or u may go for "Clean Boot" by clicking Start > msconfig > ENTER to start the System Configuration utility. Thanks--

    Over at MSFN forums, they have a discussion on tracing boot / shutdown / hibernate / standby / resume issues. It may help you to use their trace tool to determine what is causing your issue(s).
