Windows 2k installation problem
My home-built PC currently runs Win98SE - it's a GigaByte GA-7ZX with an Athlon 1800 with 512MB system RAM, nVidia GeForce2 MX graphics card. I am trying to install Win2k Pro on a new WD hard disk. 30 minutes into the installation, I get a blue screen advising me of a "hardware malfuction - see your manufacturer".
I've downloaded the Win2k driver for nVidia but cannot install them under Win98. Yet Win2k won't load unless something is upgraded. I've tried upgrade, clean install, Fat32 and NTFS - all with the same fuzzy error.
Any suggestions?

What makes you think the problem is with the video? If the video has been working through the install, I'd have a tendency to think there is another problem.
I would check th emanufacturer's site for that error message and see what, if any, possibilities are offered.
If it still looks like a video problem, get yourself another video card and disable the current on, if it is onboard, or remove it.
If you could give us an idea of where, exactly, the install stops rather than 30 minutes into the install. The last install I did of 2000 took me less than 30 minutes to complete.

sbrogden wsent me a private message indicating where the problem occurs, and it is when the install is doing the hardware detection. It does pass, apparently, the video card. This would suggest that, perhaps, thre is a problem with the main board. I would find out what board is used and check it agains the approved hardware list on the Microsoft site. If the main board is there, then it is definitely a problem on the main board. If that is the situation, you are probably better off getting a new machine (or building one as you did with this one) than finding a main board that will accept your current CPU, RAM, etc. and go with XP Professional as the OS.
