Q:
Windows 2003 domain unification
Hi,

I recently have 3 domains, contouso.com, one.contouso.com, and two.contouso.com. The thing is, they were created separately and all are parent domains. How do I join the two other domains so that they will become child domains of the contouso.com. All three domains already have existing clients and services running independely from the other, but they are conected thru trust relationship, non-transitive, external.

Also, if you have the best way on how to change a domain name, say, from one.contouso.com to go.contouso.com without negative effects.

You won't be able to change domain forests on an existing domain. Your best be would be to create the new child domain go.contouso.com on a new server and use the AD migration tool to migrate users, computers, and policies from one.contouso.com. Make sure you have DNS, DHCP, and matching services installed and configured on your new server. If done correctly there will be little downtime for AD services, but I recommend that you plan and schedule this for off hours to minimize complications with other services like exchange and LDAP dependant software and services.

Domains can be renamed pretty easily like described in this article but I’m not pretty sure what to do for the join forest of existing domains; did you try the DCPROMO? If yes what were the available options?

Thanks for the advices guys. I had the same idea with Mshen, I’m just not sure if AD migration tool is stable and trustworthy, have you tired this before and encounter no problems?

By the way Allesandro, DCpromo will only allow you to remove the domain, either remove last domain controller or just make the server a member domain.. Thanks again.
