Windows 2003, DC with SP1 not properly replicating

I have a problem which I need to find the source of. I am including as much detail as I can. Here is the situation: 3 physical locations connected by VPN, each one contains at least 1 Windows 2003 server, acting as a domain controller(some have a Windows 2000 server as well). Each location also has a Netware 6.0 server. The Windows 2003 servers at each location are acting as the backup server for that location. In order to backup the Netware server, they must have the Novell Client for Netware installed. A new location is opening soon, I have installed a new Windows 2003 server and a new Netware server for this location. On the new Windows 2003 server I installed SP1 (the other domain controllers are not running SP1). After installing the client for Netware, I now get a message saying a service failed at startup (none of the other servers get this). I also have a Active directory replication problem every couple days that requires the new 2003 server to be rebooted to solve the problem. I tried reinstalling this new server from scratch and I still get the same result. Here are my thoughts for the cause of the problem: 1. Windows 2003 server with SP1 does not support the Novell client for Netware. 2. Windows 2003 server with SP1 at one DC but not on the others. 3. I have all servers in a single Active Directory site, and I need to split them. If you have any suggestions on what steps to take first, or whether there are any known issues with my configuration, please let me know. Thank you.

Hello,

It seems you’ve left out one key detail to this puzzle….what service is it that is failing upon reboot? This may tell a lot in regards to where the problem lies.

As for SP1 for Windows Server 2003, this SP should not have any affect on replication with non-SP1 DC’s nor should it not play nice with Novell. We don’t use any Netware servers in our environment, but we do have one 2003 DC running on old hardware (lack of disk space) which currently is not running SP1 and replecates fine with two other DC’s w/ SP1 running on new hardware.

Please post the failing service and possibly it will generate some better response.

Good Luck!

I am sorry, I thought I mentioned my big problem with the service that failed. There is no error in the event log telling me which service failed. And I checked all the services that I could and they are running. I found this very odd that I do not know what service is failing. I can say that this error started just after installing the Novell Client for Netware. Thank you.

i'm operating in a setup similiar to yours. we are using w2k server w/o sp 1 and running a novell netware 6.0 server being used as a file server. i'm going out on a limb here, but does service pack 1 for w2k server come with a firewall of any sort? i have had problems with users trying to log into the novell client after installin win xp sp 2, the firewall wasn't allowing user to authenticate with novell. i'm probably way off, but that that i'd offer that piece up

My Netware client actually works fine, my problem is that Active Directory replication fails after a couple days. The service failing error started after Netware client was installed, that is why I am wondering if the Netware client is causing the problem.

then i'd try to uninstall the novell client and see if that remedies the problem with the service failing. if it does, then you know 100% it is novell

I separated the network into sites, the replication problem still exists. I uninstalled Netware clent, did not help. I uninstalled Windows 2003 SP1, this caused more problems than I wish to get into. I have begun reinstalling Windows 2003 from scratch. I will not put SP1 on this time!! So far things are working properly, no services are failing, and replication is working properly. I am still working on Exchange.
