I have an end user that is in our software developement team using Windows 2000 Server. The problem with her PC is that she cannot copy/paste, drag/drop any files/folders. She is able to copy/paste text in Word, Notepad, etc, but she cannot in Explorer. I have all the latest patches and hotfixes, but am still having the problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

That is indeed VERY strange. The first thing that I would do is Virus scan the hell out of it!

The next thing, is back up all the data, and then rebuild.

There has to be something pretty fundamentally wrong with it. Normally I would suggest a change of Mouse/Keyboard etc. But this sounds too “spookey”.

I know this is probably not what you wnated to hear, but I think that this is the best bet.

To be safe, I'll probably create an image of the server machine first, then like it was said before, scan the hell out of it! Virus scan, trojan scan, whatever scanner you can get your hands on, you can also run Security Task Manager look for suspicious processes and the software will even let you right click and quick Google the process! If something goes wrong then you can always slam the image back onto the server and further work on it.

Using Windows 2k Server as a workstation. Is the User logged as 'Administrator'? Twice I have seen similar problems, where functions that we think are everywhere in 'Windows', can be controlled through group policy permissions. You said the User could not copy/paste in explorer - this covers a multitude of sins. Are both Control-C/Control-V and 'Right-Click' Object context menu functions affected? Did you do the patch/registry edit to run explorer as a separate thread? Is Internet Explorer affected? You can find the problem with luck, or you can rebuild and clear the problem. The decision has to be yours based on time to trouble shoot, versus time to rebuild AND the state of the backup for the data. If you have an 'image' saved from when it was working correctly you only lose the work done since the image was made. If you do backup up by file, then REBUILD - test and then load the data fles. Good luck.

Before doing anything drastic, I'd take a look at her permissions, to make sure that they have no tchanged, and look at the event logs to see if there is anything that might give a clue as to what is going on with her machine. I also question the use of a server as a workstation. Sure, it can be done, but why would one want to do it? If she is developing software for a server, whay doesn't she have a workstation, and use the server as a test bed? Using the server as a workstation may give false positives, so to speak, when testing software. Steve//

I would first create another username which belongs to the local admin group and see if that new profile has the same issues. It's far less time consuming to redo a profile than a machine.

I concure with that, try another account preferable an admin and see if the effect is still there, if is not then look at the groups she participates in and what may apply! I am not clear on whether these files and folders you are talking about are local or on the server but if you really are not to concerned about this developer having full rights on her computer then you can make her an admin of that local box only and see if all is well.

ditto, ditto. Also, as well as having her use the same logon name on a 2000 Pro workstation and seeing if the problem follows, and using a different logon on same server and seeing if problem remains, try slapping 2000 server on another box and have her log in there. Let us know the results of your various trouble-shooting strategies.

I have met that before. Finally we tried to recreate user profile, and it fixed the problem. We found somehow the user didn't have permission on C: drive. Still don't know what caused that. try logon as other user on same box, and same user on other box with new profile. if both working, try to recreate user profile.

Check out the error message to see if she is receiving a permission denied type error message or the network cannot be found error. You didn't state what the error was when the user attempt to copy, drag and drop the files into the folder. If she can copy and paste into a Word pad or note pad, it sounds like she is attempting to drag and drop her files to a location in which she does not have permission to or the path is unavailable for whatever reason. So, identify the error and resend so we can assist.

I also belive this is a user based problem and not installaton problem, here is the CheckupProcedure. 1. Login as a differant user to check if the problem Persist if so reinsatll IE 6 SP1 should fix it, Bu t first check no limitation are availabe for that User. 2. if it is a user based problem change the user folder under "Document an settings" then rlogin again, check if the error disappers if so use a util called "Profwiz" in order to regenerate the Profile from the Old to new or just copy the user folders from Old to New wich is a much better option. 3. if the Problem still exist for that specific user then open mmc load snap in called security and analysis. run it an check for user based policy. if non of the above is working a compete reinstall is the last resort

I am too questioning why you using server as a workstation. I would check the permissions and then do a re-build if necessary.
