Subfile Control Record
I have a display file with a Window Subfile. The Subfile Control Record is defined with a Window Message line, which I want to use to display instructions to the user ("Press F3 to quit", etc.). When the user presses a PgUp or PgDn key, the message line disappears. Is there any way to stop this behavior?

Not the way to go

1 Put your function key detinitions on a seperate record – using lines 23 & 24 —
I would name the records so it’s apparent they are a set, like x001sfl and x001ctl and x001ft (footer)

2. Put an overlay keyword in your control record

3. Immediately before the exfmt of the control record
write the footer record.

Note – the control record + the displayed line of the subfile cannot extend into the lines used by the footer record. So if the footer is on lines 23 and 24 then the subfile should not use those lines.

Vatchy is on to it, I missed the windows part — the window WDWTITLE below should do the trick nicely.

Instead of a message line, use the WDWTITLE keyword and put your function key definitions in the windows itself. Here's a sample:
         A WINDOW(16 51 3 24 *NOMSGLIN)
         A WDWTITLE((*TEXT 'F12=Cancel') (*COL-
A OR BLU) (*DSPATR RI) *CENTER *BOTTO-
         A M)

This particular puts the text "F12=Cancel" on the bottom frame line of the window centered in blue text and reverse image. You can find all of the particulars in the IBM manual or just do a search on WDWTITLE. You can also use a variable for the text and change what is in the variable on the fly (F24=More keys).
