Q:
Will Samba allow a Linux server to act as a domain controller in an Active Directory environment?
We are replacing a Windows 2003 server in facility that is connected to our network and main site with a point to point T1. It currently is a domain controller in an Active Directory. Will the newest version of Samba allow me to replace this computer with a Linux version? Can it act as a domain controller in an AD environment and synchronize with the other DC's?

Software/Hardware used:
Windows 2003, Linux, Samba, Active Directory

Samba, with a major version up to and including 3, can act as an NT4 domain controller. The code for AD DC functionality is in the works in Samba 4, which is currently in alpha (i.e., not for production use, unless you have a lot of free time and a strong constitution).

Samba 3.x (and some 2.x versions, IIRC) can help a host join an AD domain and act as a member, but not as a DC.
