Will deleting a user from Active Directory delete him from the Outlook GAL?

GAL, Global Address List, Active Directory, Outlook

I deleted a user from Active Directory and then downloaded a new copy of the global address list (GAL) in Microsoft Outlook. However, the user's name still shows up in the Outlook GAL. Why is that? How can I delete him from the GAL?

A couple more questions for you…

What version of Exchange are you using? 2000, 2003, 2007?

Have you manually updated the Recipient Update Service?

Did you say yes when prompted whether to mark the mailbox for deletion? (Typically the mailbox will be disabled but not purged for 30 days).

The big question here is what version of exchange you are running.
