Will courses other than an MCP and CCNA give me the best salary?


Cisco certifications, Salaries, Career development, CCNA, MCP, Certifications, Networking certifications

Hi,

I have completed a B.E in computer science with a second class degree. Now I am pursuing MCP and CCNA certification courses. Can these courses make me get the best salary in the company or do I have to do other courses?

You'll want to look at current salary and certification survey results from CertCities.com, Certification magazine (www.certmag.com), GoCertify.com, and Foote Partners to get a sense of where the real money is, and where the current and future action will be. Security, architecture, and networked storage are all good areas to dig into, whereas MCP and CCNA are strictly starting points on the IT cert path and by themselves unlikely to lead to a higher salary, though they can lead to other certifications that will ultimately pay off.

Ed is definately right on that point. If you are just starting out and are more familiar with windows then go ahead with the MCP. after that get your CCNA. these two will get your foot in the door. if you want to work towards higher salary then go for a security degree such as CISSP or a related security course. this area is growing faster with every threat that comes out.

At the risk of opening a pandora’s box of comments, and while I do NOT disagree with Buddy’s and Ed’s comments, I’m at the point where I need to make a statement here:

Many members have posted regarding what cert’s to obtain to receive the BEST PAY, or what course work or degree to pursue to obtain the BEST RATE. This attitude of pay me more more more, or how do I minimize my (intellectual) investment and yet receive the highest salary irks me to no end.

I’m no youngster, and yet this is not a rant about “kids these days”. My issue is with those of us who are in this profession mainly or only for the compensation it offers. As with ANY job, you need to enjoy your job first and foremost. Yes, getting paid is a nice fringe benefit, but it should not be the reason (main or only) to get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

Oh well, just my $0.02. I’ll crawl back under my rock now….

First of all there is nothing as ‘best pay’, it is all relative. The one that may look best at the start of career may not appear best after a couple of years. Moreover there are number of certificated, but primarily it is wrong to find out a certification that will fetch you the best pay. Rather see you interest first as IT itself is a vast ocean and once you jump into once segment, switching over to another becomes quite difficult.
