Answer Wiki:
Upgrading from SQL Server 2008 to R2 is very straightforward since there were no significant changes to the database engine. R2 provides significant productivity gains: For DBAs in managing database instances (single console) and deploying new applications and updates. For end users: To take full advantage of the Self Service BI capabilities (i.e. PowerPivot for SharePoint) and Report Builder 3.0.
