This is dependant of your personal preferences.
there are a lot tranings from different Vendors
SAP is offerin Training for Basis,
but keep in Mind Basis consits out of Operating System, Database, and the central Applikation.

Basis is an good choice for the future, but an strong continuos Training is needed – Java may be the future – and even if Basis is not offering an job you can specialise to any Application in the enterprise bussines.

The best way to learn SAP basis is to read, read, read and hands-on experience. Try to find materials/books in regard to the web application server (WAS) and Net Weaver architecture. If u were new and fresh to SAP, you'll need some time to capture the information. In case u have an extra budget and willing to spend a large sum of money, joining basis course and get certified would be a good idea too. Not necessarily you have to get certified right after completing the course, but along the way when you are quite familiar around the system. Definitely worth it in the long run. I would recommend the best is to find a company which is willing to invest in you and sponsor the cost, however in return you might be bonded for a certain period of time. One more thing try to get exposed to Net Weaver too, as this is the enhanced and upgraded architecture of basis. Nowadays more and more company turn to run their system online through portal-based system which is powered by Net Weaver instead of R/3 powered by basis (WAS). Basis are guaranteed by SAP AG of a life cycle more than a decade. So if you asked me does basis have a good future i certainly say yes it does. I was a server/exchange environment administrator before and recently joined an SAP company as a basis admin. I would say, this is the best career path ever. Never i heard those who jumped into SAP field would want to stop doing what they do. Not that i know of.
