Please which is better in a HD in a lap top computer,  a 5400 or a 7200?
I have no idea what the numbers mean.  Have a chance to get a Dell with 5400 hard drive holding a TB of memory.  Is the 5400 faster than 7200?
Thanks a heap.

The number refers to drive speed. The 7200 would be faster. Depending on your requirements for a PC that may not make a difference.

and if you are running on battery, if you run a 7200 hard drive, your battery dies a little faster too.

That's 7,200 revolutions per minute (RPMs) - how fast the drive spins. If you're doing anything intensive (other than browsing the web and checking email) a 7,200 RPM drive or, better yet, a solid state drive would likely be best.
