If you are installing PTF's, and having to ask this question, I suggest that you go to IBM.COM and browse the manuals there.

You need to have investigated your present system, checked the PTFS that you intent to apply to ensure that they are compatible, carried out a backup, worked out a recovery route if unanticipated things happen (which means that you anticipated them!) assessed the impact of the PTFS, and know precisely what's happening.

IBM do really good manuals - you'll get better answers than a couple of sentences here..

DSPPTF to view what you currently have on your system.
WRKPTFGRP to view group PTFs as well (F11 to view text).
GO PTF will display the PTF menu.
Always read the cover letter as some PTFs require an IPL and in any event always perform a Full Save beforehand or at the least a SAVSYS.

We find that iSeries Navigator is a very handy tool for managing PTFs.
It simplifies the process and is a bit more intuitive.

If you have multiple iSeries, it also has a feature that will compare PTFs between multiple machines. This saves a lot of time.
