A Layer 3 (L3) switch is definitely faster than a router, and you can use an L3 switch in place of router, unless you need a WAN interface (serial interfaces, etc.) to terminate on the box.

Thants not necessarily true – some switches can support WAN Links, but those modls are fairly pricey. Routers typically can support features – VPNs for example – that most L3 Switches really arent designed for…
