What’s better for transferring files over the Internet: HTTP or FTP?

I'm looking at the best ways to to transfer files over the Internet and the top two options I found are HTTP and FTP. Now, I'm trying to get other people's experiences and the advantages between the two (Performance, file size limitations, reliability, etc.).

    What types of systems are you looking to transfer files between ? Are you looking to send individual files or multiple as a batch process ?

    It definitely depends on the specifics. FTP is often best because this is exactly what the protocol was designed for. Yet HTTP may work better given your application/network architecture. Just keep security in mind (i.e. for authentication and especially encryption) if you're going to be transferring sensitive information.
