Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I can give you a wee bit o’ info on this.
FMTDTA was originally created by IBM to assist users moving from the System/3 to the System/38, the forerunner of the AS/400 – i Series family. It helped users format and sort their data for conversion. The command worked so well that some continued to use it to select and sort data as they developed software.

Its rare to see it used today. With all the modern tools now available on the i Series there are a number of superior alternatives.

Hi, FMTDTA is the new name command for old SORT program used on sorting files and optionally re-formating it. It works on a character base not on field, so normally used on "flat" files (with no structure defined (DDS)). Now we have many tools like SQL, OPNQRYF, Logical files and others to do the same. Regards, Wilson

Hi, Many years ago when we converted S/36 software to AS/400 we used FMTDTA as a replacement for the S/36 SORT routines. These days I would use a logical file, SQL or OPNQRYF instead. Regards, Martin Gilbert.
