Definitely more details required - what are you running, what are you protecting.......what size is your operation (to get an idea of the scope). For home usage, a router might do.... or an extra PC that isn't in use. For larger networks, the possibilities are numerous. If you are using open source firewall then you can use any PC with multiple nics to install the firewall, or else you can chose Cisco ASA or Juniper firewalls which comes with the hardware and IOS.

I’d go with smooth wall, its easy to install, and does not take a powerful machine (I run it on an old P3) the basic version is free, which will give you time to try it out. There is also a very supportive user community.

My clients by and large like firewall appliances offered by SonicWall and Juniper…Don’t underestimate the value of personal firewalls running on local server and workstation systems as well.
