IBM has a section detailing what the AS400 device configuration need to be for certain printers, as well as whether or not they are supported as a 'direct-connect' device (with no virtual printer session needed): http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas1b44a2cf4ba778d83862568250053649f

We have a Windows print server that hosts a few Client Access sessions for a couple of HP DeskJet 6980's. We also have a Lexmark T640, W840, IBM InfoPrint 1120, HP 1320n, Brother MFC-8460.

The HP 1320n has been an awesome little printer. Unfortunately, they have stopped producing that model. :(

We user primarily HP printers, attached via TCP/IP to our AS/400. Been doing this for at least 10 years with good success. If other brands of printers support HP emulation you should be in good shape. We drive a Savin 32 ppm printer every day. We also have a big Ricoh copier / printer attached, which works just fine. Selecting the HP LJ III or IV typically works just fine.

We also drive a small number of HPs via client access, both laser jets and ink jets. CA takes care of the conversion very nicely.
