That really depends on the employer. You would need to see what the definition is according to what the HR department says and how they define that role formally. The role could be widely different for different companies for many reasons.

Everything your boss tells you to do.

Exactly…what does your employer *need* you to do? Manage routers and switches? Apply patches? Fix computer problems? Probably all the above and much more.

I just got hired on as a JNE about a month ago. I’m currently still a telecommunications student. This company has 4 stores between Utah and Idaho.

My responsibilities are;
1. make sure the servers havent shut down
2. the automated processes havent frozen up
3. the phones are working
4. check for malicious attack reports on our firewall
5. check stability of each computer to the network
6. connect a new thinclient if one of the older computers has an unrecoverable critical error
7. make sure the credit card machines in the retail area are connected to their server
8. upgrade any server computers that are tasking too high
9. troubleshoot remote stores if they have any of the listed issues
10. inventory all hardware/software that i can find
11. make sure the office printer is stable and keeping its static IP
12. confirm that the MS Dynamics Retail Management is connecting to the database
13. manage the sonicwall firewall to make sure connectivity is tight and no ports are open without use

And if every thing on that list is showing no signs of error I get to work on the assigned projects that my boss wants me to look into. We have a weekly meeting to discuss the upcoming changes to the direction of our IT department, 90% of the revenue this place makes is with online sales so there are 2 part time IT guys doing database programming for Magento Sales. I’m the only full time IT person on the floor to fix anything critical that may happen through out the day.

You may want to ask the person that hires you exactly what your duties are going to be then be prepared to do just about anything along those lines. Good troubleshooting skills are a great help in this field.

I hope that helps! I’ve honestly never had more fun in a job :)

Job titles do not always match the job responsibilities you are asked to do. This is especially true in larger corporations when they are trying to give you a certain pay or grade level that does not correspond to the job title. You may have all the responsibilities of a network engineer but they do not want to pay you that rate until you get more experience.
