What is the best way to access Sametime Meeting on a single server from behind and in front of the firewall

I have a single Sametime server on my network identified as sametime.net behind the firewall and sametime.com in front of the firewall. There is public IP and DNS entry for sametime.com and the address is natted to the server's internal IP address. We can start sametime meeting behind the firewall without a problem, but cannot access the server in front of the firewall. IBM says it can't be done, but I have a hard time believing we are the only company with this setup. Is there a way for this to work?
