Trinig to find steps to allow a full tape to be erased so full backups will run. Differential backups work fine.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Erasing a tape is a task that must be done by your backup software. If you tell me what software (and version) you use, I can help you look up the answer, but it should be an option from the backup media server. Also, please note that if this tape media is WORM (write locked), you might not be able to erase it in a supported way that leaves it available for writing.

I'm reverting Flame's answer- SDLT is a tape format that supports WORM, but is not necessarily WORM.

It is important to understand degaussing of media. All LTO and 3590 media have servo tracks and will be useless if degaussed. A degaussed eleimates all data on an LTO or 3590 tape including the servo tracks. The difference between degaussing and erasing is that erasing eliminates data and can be done without destroying the servo tracks. Don Blackburn Bowindustries@aolcom

Hi Don, I believe that he does not have WORM tape- it was only mentioned because of a previous answer that assumed he did. I am reverting your answer. If the asker makes it clear that he does indeed need to know how to erase a worm media, then we'll revert the revert :)
