Answer Wiki:
GridFTP is a new standard that builds up on the classic FTP as we know it. GridFTP provides a number of enhancements such as simultaneous/parallel transfer streams of a file, increasing overall transfer rates, site-to-site transfers (much alike FXP), partial transfers of a file, fault tolerance and automatic tcp optimisation. These new features ensure that the new FTP protocol overcomes many of the problems the older FTP had when working under bad conditions, but also increase overall performance under ideal conditions.
