What backup strategy should we use?
Hi,

We are about to implement backup solution for our own organization. we have IBM products. IBM storage DS 8100 with 10 Tb and IBM tape library TS3310. OS is installed on SAN and we do not have any virtual cloud. each server has one OS installed on it and all are Linux. I would like to know that what kind of backup strategy should we use to take backup on tapes. Like. Daily backup, weekly backup and monthly backup.

Please help me out to find best answer on it.

Your quick response will be highly appreciated

Answer Wiki:
evaluate the data how often does the data change how critical is it how long must it be kept are there any regulations involved must a permanent copy be maintained is off site storage going to be used all data is not created equal, but if you don't really care and just want to have a backup so you can say you have one then do daily differentials and a weekly full. if you do care then you must do the work and research it. ck with someone from each interested data group. One business group manager may tell you that their transaction server is absolutely critical and each minute of down time cost thousands, so for that you want it clustered or real time replicated. Developement may tell you data changes a litlle each week but they need a copy saved forever. So for them daily incrimentals, weekly fulls which get overwritten each week and month but then end of month is saved for a year and the year end forever. Do you get the idea? If you want to do it right, then you have to know the needs of that data and from there you can plan out what is best. One more thing if you want to achive the potential throughput of those LTO drives then the backup application must support Multiplex.

Thanks David,

We have oracle database, File servers and windows based AD running on our servers. now i m worried about file server and database server. user works in 24 hour shifts.

what if i implement 6 days incremental and 7th day for the week full backup.

Yes by doing that rotation you can safely say that you are doing a backup.
