You can use virtualization to add additional domain controllers to your network for redundancy. One issue to keep in mind is that the VMs need to start up in context and having only virtual DCs could be an issue if there are no DCs to authenticate against (DR scenario, etc). The most important is the DNS. You need to update it and also the physical servers who are starting need to say hello to the network by writing there name and IP in the DNS server. So I would always at least one AD with DNS on a physical machine available
