For the most part, and while this is not always the case, They are incredibly expensive to use.  The ink cartridges now cost almost as much as the printer, and you don’t get all that many pages before the cartridge runs out ink.  Secondly, the cartridges have a bad tendency to dry out before you can use all of them up.  Thirdly a lot of the older ones are not supported in the new O/S’s but the older lasers are.  This is not always true though.  I do have 4 inkjets sitting in storage because they are not supported, but only 1 very very old laser.  I will also say that toner cartridges for lasers printers are not cheap either.

I say cost and speed are the biggest issues. My inkjet requires 5 color and 1 black cartridge. Some printers have only one color and when one runs out you have to buy a new one instead of just the color that ran out. Speed is slower but if you are not in a rush inkjet are cheaper than laser printers. If you do not print a lot the inkjet will dry out some times. It may be cheaper to take the file to you local office supply store for printing.

Sometimes you can get a new printer with current technology for the cost of just the replacement cartridges. Just remember the cartridges that come with a new printer are only about 1/3 full this is because there is less waste if the printer is returned.

Inkjet are good if you do very little printing, but regularly (which avoids the cartridges drying out). If you print plenty of pages, and/or don't print for long periods of time, a laser jet might work better for you.
