SaaS is for the most part, still a big bet if you will, so I think that we are getting a little ahead of ourselves in thinking that there are "best practices" for its monetiziation. I do think that the ideas presented in the article make sense. The truth is that these principles have been applicable for a long time (think: repeatable processes). It is always more efficient catering to the needs of the proverbial 80% of the market, than the 20% with special needs. Hence the saying, "the needs of the many outweight the needs of the few".
For the moment, I think that the immediate challenge is developing the infrastructure needed to enable software utilitization, which will be heavily based on virtualization technology, while the specifics of how to make a buck at it are worked out.
It is an interesting topic to say the least and I expect that we will all be hearing more about it, as well as impact and be impacted by it, in the not so distant future.
