We have a basic Websphere application that is infrequently used. As a result, when it is used, everyone pays the "first time" penalty, and response times can be VERY slow. The second attempt is better, but by then the client is already mad. Is there a way to keep the application "awake" so that good response times are maintained. FYI-A similar experience can be observed in CGI programs.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There is no thumb rule for all applications. You must analyse your application and find where the problem is. There are too many components in typical J2EE apps (network, database, EIS through JCA).
Some points to check:
- are you reading/caching data by the first access?
- are there initialisations for the first access?

Without knowing anything at all about the system and how it’s been tuned, the only advice possible is for standard, default configurations.

The advice is simply to tune your system for its workload. If you’re running with the work management configuration that came with the system, then there’s no surprise with this behavior. Read the Work Management guide. Tune your system.
