You should read the documentation that came with the wireless access point carefully. They should show you how to secure the AP from unwated connections; you can also Google for a plethora of how-to articles.
I *strongly* recommend that if you are going to configure the AP, if at all possible, do so via a WIRED connection (e.g., plug a network cable in and configure the wireless security). Not much point of configuring wireless security if you are broadcasting in the clear what you are changing.
WAP is not an easy thing to setup in a home environment. You have to have an authentication server, Radius or similar, and the access point has to be able to authenticate through the server. Most home access points do not support that. Quick and easy is to block all MAC addresses except your known PCs and WEP for encryption. While I was setting up my home wireless, there were already two unknown MAC addresses trying to gain access.
