Answer Wiki

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There are many purposes:

1, Saving space
2. You can tool around with a different operating systems and if something goes wrong you did not hurt anything.
3. Being able to run programs that do not work on your operating system
4. Testing programs which may be used on different operating systems.
5. Virtual networks
6. Can run multiple platforms with your different operating systems

I am sure there are even more uses than what I have listed here. I have used it as an education tool more than anything.

Good luck.

I use VMWare to boot different operating systems on my local PC without installing them, essentially avoiding problems. I recently downloaded AndroidLive and created a bootable flash drive. With VMWare I was able to boot from the drive and load the operating system without installing it on my machine. I have also used it in the past to test the stability of hardware and software on different versions of windows, and have used it to run Mac OS on a PC. This is a great tool and everyone should learn to use it, it's free and almost fool proof. Give it a try

From a datacenter perspective it allows you to not only reduce the amount of space needed but power consumption and heat generation are also greatly reduced. It also creates a redundant environment in which to host servers providing both server and network and power redundancy by using multiple physical hosts to the virtual machines.
