Answer Wiki:
VMware server or workstation is an application that would run under your Windows Vista OS. It would allow you to install one or more Windows 2003 OSs within the VMware virtual machines. You would still need to have Windows Vista installed. If Windows Vista can be installed, you should be able to get Windows 2008 server installed. It accepts many of the same drivers as Windows Vista, but there is no guarantee. Why are you trying to install a Server OS on your laptop?

You could install the new operating system in a virtual machine on VMware Server, Microsoft Virtual Server and even in Microsoft Virtual PC, which are all free.

Don’t forget though, any virtual software is going to eat up any resources your base computer/laptop has. Don’t expect to be lightning fast on your laptop if you have a virtual server running as well.
