 VMware Converter
Please note: The following question was recently submitted via e-mail by a user. I've heard that virtual machines created with VMware Server can run on VMware ESXi, but they have to be converted using the tool provided by VMware. Is there anything I need to do to prep my VM for this transition? I've had tough times with tools like this before. Do you recommend a backup, or is it pretty straightforward?

Answer Wiki:
As with everything, you should back it up. However, VMware Converter is a straight forward tool which definitely works. You can either perform the conversion with the source VM shutdown and just ahve the converter point to the files which will "clone" over to your ESXi infrastructure. If the VM is powered up, You can aim at the guest VM, and it will install an "converter agent' and deploy it that way as well.
