Q:
VM from Backup not booting
I have a VM which will not boot, I initially had a new VM with Windows Server 2003 Std which work fine, I then restored a systems from tape to the VM and it will not boot, In safe mode its hangs at the acpitabi.dat file. On a normal boot I just see a black screen. I have tried to fix mbr and have disabled many of the services through the 2003 console mode and still no luck.

The machine which I am trying to restore was a Dell PowerEdge 1950. The server is not accessable to clone so the only copy of the machine i have is on tape, this why I am restoring the fies to a VM.

Thanks

Restoring a physical server from backups to virtual hardware doesn't usually work because the OS was built and configured for the physical hardware. If possible you should use a physical to virtual migration tool or rebuild the server from scratch.

You should be able to repair install the OS to keep the data that you have, but you would have to reinstall most applications.
