Vista error accessing network drive

I have a very strange problem. It concerns accessing network shares. Here is my scenario :
A user on a Vista PC opens a shortcut to a network share that they have permission to access. On the file server we receive a failure audit error in the Security log (event id 560) to say the user has tried to access a different share that they DO NOT have permission to access.
When this user tries to access the same share on an XP client, the error does not appear.
When another user, who has identical user rights, accesses the same network share on the same client PC, we do not receive the failure audit.
Why are we getting these misleading errors ?

This might be heapeening due to local profile cruption which is having a currupt GUID with in the pc. So just reset the profile on this PC . This might solve your issue.

Can the user on the Vista machine browse to the share instead of using the shortcut?
No the user cannot browse to the share. This is due to group polocies that are in place
