There are a few tools out there. VMware has a great virtual environment monitoring tool if you are using VMware.
Also if you go the IBM route you can look into the Tivoli monitoring software. Its affordable and easy to use.

We’re in an HP environment, so we use HP SIM, which has built-in virtualization monitoring. We also use SolarWinds free tool for virtual machine monitoring. We’re looking at Solarwinds Orion tool as well.
We are using Virtual Infrastructure 3.5. I use the performance reports from Virtual Center to monitor the guests and esx hosts and solarwinds for monitoring the more critical services. I’ve also created performance alerts to montior disk space which email me when disk space is getting low.
Veam and Solarwinds also have some free tools to monitor VMs you may wish to look at these as well.
