Consolidation of multiple physical servers into a single physical server, and better use of resources so that you don't have idle resources and the two big driving forces behind server virtualization.

From those two you get side effects of reduced network switch requirements, reduced cooling requirements, reduced space requirements, reduced power requirements, etc as you have less physical servers which need these resources.

I’m just kind of learning about Virtualization pros and cons, but isn’t one of them Security? For example if you have two applications running on one server if you access to the server you have access (in theory) to all apps on the server, where as if you create two “virtual servers” on the same box they are seperate and therefor more secure? - brent
