Q:
Virtual Box Sharing Feature (Vista=Host, Kubuntu=Guest)
Dear IT KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE,

How can I set up a shared folder between a Windows Vista Host and a Kubuntu Guest?

I have seen many tutorials explaining the reverse (Host = Ubuntu, Guest = Windows).
I wish to understand more on cross-desktop sharing.
Thank you.

I have not used virtual box on Windows, so I can't give you an answer for that, but in general, I prefer to use network shares instead of the "shared folders" features from virtualization softwares. I have had stability problems when using such features on ms virtual pc, and on vitual box on ubuntu.

If you want to do that, you will need to install samba on the Kubuntu guest, and configure the shared folder. Then you can access that folder from vista as if it was on a separate physical machine on the network (i.e. \\Kubuntu_machine_IP_Address\your_shared_folder )

I have WinXP host and Ubuntu Gnome guest running in Virtual Box. Unfortunately I have forgotten the details of how I set up the shared folder on XP - but Samba was not necessary. It’s a supported feature directly in VBox.
Detailed instructions are in the VBox User Manual Chapter 8.20 VBoxManage sharedfolder add/remove . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Page 112
