How can I view the files on the back up tape itself and not the log? I need to verify which tape has the most recent files on it, out of several monthly tapes.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

It is all up to the backup application used. Most will keep a history of the data written to tape in a database, some write a catalog file to the tape which can then be merged into the database, and some have a scan feature that will read the tape and report on the contents. So bottom line check the documentation for the application used.

Melanie, The tapes I am using are Maxell DAT 72. We backup every night and I have one tape for every weekday and additional ones for every month end. I re use the month end from year to year. (I.e. Tape physically labeled June 2010 will be saved in vault and will be replaced with month end tape labeled June 2011 next year on July 1, 2011) I'm trying to figure out which of the month end tapes is the most recent by trying to view the files...since the physical labeling was distorted. The backup tape from June 2010 should have files on it dated June 30,2010 and nothing after that date. July 2010 would have files dated July 31, 2010 and nothing after that date and so forth..... Hope this help with the information you needed and any ideas are deeply appreciated. Thanks, Cooper2010
