veritas shadow copy

We are experiencing issues with veritas shadow copy. We were using shadow copy for all the servers at first but gradually this part started to fail. Since we do our backups after hours, do we really need to do shadow copy backups at all? Here is an example of the error message: Backup - FRANKLIN OFO: Initialization failure on: "FRANKLINShadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). OFO: Snapshot error (0xfffffed1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status. Backup - WILLOW OFO: Initialization failure on: "WILLOWShadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). OFO: Snapshot error (0xfffffed1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status. Our backup tech doesn't want to contact veritas about this because each of his previous experiences with them has been so painful. I would appreciate any advice. This is NOT my area of expertise. rt

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I am not certain on this failure code but I can honestly say that Veritas support is excellent, they have never let me down and have the ability to continue to work on the prob 24/7 as they have support sites globally. They have helped me out of some pretty major holes in recent years.

Apparantly you were never put on hold for 4.5 hours and finally cut off without ever talking to a support person.

I would have to agree...I have also had good experience with Veritas support. I just did a guick search on your error and found several support documents on veritas's site. You might also want to check your event logs on the servers running the backups to see if they offer anymore insight into the problem. Brian

Our tech, Hector found a document about checking vss writer status using the command vssadmin list writers. It says we should reboot our exchange server which we can do tonight. We got a failed state retryable error. On one of our domain controllers with shadow copy problems it said no error but it is waiting for completion. Any suggestions for that? I'm surprised by your experience with veritas. Our experience has been pretty consistent. The last time I contacted them we had rebuilt the backup server by redoing the RAIDs and C: partition. (Incidentally, this showed that isolating the C: partition on a separate mirror speeds things up dramatically). When we called them about restoring the backup database we had a full backup from the weekend and we had copied all of the files from C: to a different partition after shutting off the veritas services. We contacted them around 8:00 AM and asked what method to use. I worked with them until ~9:00 PM. At this point I went home because they were no longer responding to my emails. We finally gave up a few days later and Hector rebuilt the jobs from scratch.
