Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 errors - not backing up

Q:
Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 errors - not backing up
I'm running Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 on a windows 2000 PDC.
I just upgraded to SP4, and when I rebooted the Veritas install wizard came up saying I needed to install.
So I went thru the process and rebooted and check all my settings and they were still all in there. My backup was scheduled for that night with all the correct parameters, however when it ran it errored out.
Here is the error message I get:

"Check status : Error: a000846b, The job failed with the following error:
Device could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Remote Agent for Windows Servers.
Make sure that the Remote Agent for Windows Servers is running on the target computer. "

Well I did check and the Remote Agent service is running on both of our win2k servers.
I rebooted both, same thing. I did a repair, same thing. I ran updates, rebooted, same thing.
I researched the error online and can't really
come up with anything.

Please help! I'm not sure where to go from here.

I did not uninstall/reinstall. But I did do an install over the top of the previous files on both the local server and the remote server.

Also make sure that you have all the update patches for this product as there is an exploit out in the wild for it.

Are you using the correct version of the agent on the servers? (latest agent?)

Hooray, someone else has this error. Luckily I’m getting rid of this server. Mine’s been like this since the 8th of this month, however we’ve been running SP4 for about two years with no problems. I was going to nuke the app and reinstall.

Just a couple of quick questions for you? Are any other applications breaking? Does it take a long time to boot up? Do you have APC PowerChute Business Edition Agent or Server running?

Have you checked or posted this here?

 <a href="http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/index.jspa" title="http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/index.jspa" target="_blank">http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/in…</a>

I have found the solutions to several issues with both version 9 and 10 here.

Patch them ASAP!

APC PowerChute Business Edition Agent, very possible since it created so many strange symptoms.

You may have to uninstall completely and then reinstall, with patches of course.

Check the Veritas forum first, it is a very good source of info and they respond very quickly.

If you have their support service, then call them. Their help menu sucks so don?t beat yourself up searching in it?

This is why I asked about APC:
copy and paste the following url.

 <a href="http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=CcoEjGLh&p_lva=2929&p_faqid=7202&p_created=1119891241&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD03LjAuNCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9NDQwJnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li" title="http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=CcoEjGLh&p_lva=2929&p_faqid=7202&p_created=1119891241&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD03LjAuNCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9NDQwJnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li" target="_blank">http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg…</a>

Hmm, are you sure that link’s right?

eucarya   0 pts.  |   Aug 25 2005  10:18AM GMT

I have ran all the upgrades.
I have installed the latest Remote agent on both the local and remote server.
I get that error above when I try to do a test run.
I ran the actual job and I got this error:
========
Job ended: Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 1:30:18 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xa000fe29 - Authentication failed on connection to the server.
Final error category: Security Errors

Errors
Click an error below to locate it in the job log
Backup - XXXXXX
Access is denied to Remote Agent. Check the login account for the specified device.
===========

Now I am 100% positive that the login account is correct. As I have reentered the info 3 times and still get the error.

And no, I am not running the APC manager.

Any other ideas?
You help is greatly appreciated!

This happened to me without having changed the APC software (still running on v7.1) so I think it’s a red herring.

Not to confuse the issue, but I’ve seen similar issues running Veritas NetBackup- it turned out to be a problem with the service- I had to set the service to run under a user account that had administrative priveledges, and allow that user account the right to logon as a service. Might be worth taking a look at.

I have the login account set to my domain administrator account. It has never been a problem as I have stated previously until I upgraded to SP4.
Does anyone think doing a complete and total unininstall and then reinstalling will help?
If so is there a way to export my backups so I can reimport them once I reinstall?

eucarya   0 pts.  |   Aug 29 2005  11:46AM GMT

anyone have any answers to the export the info so i can uninstall/reinstall? or have any suggestions on how to resolve the “access is denied to Remote Agent. Check the login account for the specified device” error?

Have you tried installing the media server bit on another machine and then remotely connecting to the original server? Does that come up with the same errors? As far as I can tell you can then store job templates on the media server and save yourself some configuration.

If you copy the data and catalog directories to another directory on the server, uninstall and reinstall then copy the data and catalog directories back to the new install directory this should keep the job information and the previous job history and catalog’s for recoveries.

Hi.

I have symantec backup exec 12 installed on a server running windows server 2003. I only do backups on the local server to a Certance Ultrium tape drive. Backups were running fine until last week. I keep getting the following error :
Check status : Error: e000846b, The job failed with the following error: The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.

I have tried everything. I have installed all updates and patches. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the application and reinstalled the updates and patches. Still getting the error. Im gonna give up soon and try some other software to do the job.

Please help!!!!!

Kyle
