Why does as DB2 table need journaling when doing updats from VB SQL? Our setup is SQL, link server, local DSN to AS400.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Hi,

Do you know if your setup uses commitment control, because commitment control normally requires journalling. Do you use commit or rollback commands?

Regards,

Martin Gilbert.

I think this is a function of the connection.

Trying to do a DML operation (insert/update/delete) against a DB2 system over a linked server requires you to turn on journaling (roughly equivalent to SQL Server logging) for the destination object. This is because SQL Server automatically creates transactions surrounding DML operations over a linked server, and the functionality cannot be turned off.

We found that Selects work fine with no journaling, but Updates/Deletes/Inserts require it. If you have any experience doing INSERTS from SQL into DB2 table, I'd love to hear from you. We are having a performance problem writing to an AS400 on the WAN. Thanks!

I hope I understand the issue. I do inserts/updates/deletes daily from my client access workstations via DTT, Excel VBA & standalone SQL statements. Lots of them! We do not use journaling at all. The Excel VBA jobs display a record counter so I could supply timings. I saw a comment about server to server - that I do not do. Let me know if I can help.
