Two non-Crystal alternatives: 1. ActiveReports (DataDynamics): VB people rave about this report writer. The designer is incredibly intuititive (if you've used Access you will be right at home in this designer). I've used it to good effect myself. http://www.datadynamics.com/Products/ProductOverview.aspx?Product=ARNET 2. XtraReports (DevExpress): This product is pretty new, and is still rough around the edges, but it is less expensive than ActiveReports (especially considering that you get an End User Designer with the basic product, while you have to buy the Pro version of ActiveReports for the same feature). I have found the designer not quite as nice/intuitive as ActiveReports, but still very nice, and one can be productive with it once getting the hang of how the product is put together. I have also found the support staff very responsive to my questions/concerns. http://www.devexpress.com/?section=/products/NET/XtraReports

Crystal Reports was a great tool prior to version 9. You could embed it in VB apps, compile reports into .exe files and call them from VB as well. Version 8.5 was the last version of the product that supported the ability to compile. All new versions require licensed runtimes or server software. This, coupled with their increased licensing fees for the developer versions are causing us to look at other options after being a crystal report user for the last 6 years. If you are creating VB ASP code the new version of crystal reports looks pretty promising, but high licensing fees may negate any benefits, depending on the size of your shop and number of developers/users.

Another cheaper tool is Intelliview ( www.intelliview.com )

Many things should be factored into your selection: 1. Is the code executing from a server or workstation? 2. Is this a web based application and you want reports viewable from the browser? 3. How many developers do you need to have copies? 4. How is the report product licensed? Site, per user? 5. How easy is it to interface with VB? Many great report creation products present a formidable challenge to the VB programmer at interface time, especially if parameters need to be passed to the report at run time. Create a list of your requirements and then work from there, evaluating all the Pro's and Con's of each product. If you have the time try and get eval copies and have 1 or 2 developers try them on a small test application in your hardware/software environment. This separates the marketing hype from the real world, really fast.

We also have been a user of Crystal and have been quite happy. I am sorry to hear from the one person about the impact of going version 9. We also looked at an open source tool called datavision. As a pilot I took several reports we had written in crystal and was able to recode them in crystal. It certainly was not slick as it relates to the gui, but if you keep it simple, it is not bad. VB implementation however is not good, so the execution of the report is via a .bat file within VB. If you need something at $0 cost, it can be done...... Laura
