Difference between active-x control and active-x dll
An ActiveX control can be automatically downloaded and executed by a Web browser. ActiveX is not a programming language, but rather a set of rules for how applications should share information. Programmers can develop ActiveX controls in a variety of languages, including C, C++, Visual Basic, and Java.
A DLL ,Short for Dynamic Link Library, a library of executable functions or data that can be used by a Windows application. Typically, a DLL provides one or more particular functions and a program accesses the functions by creating either a static or dynamic link to the DLL. A static link remains constant during program execution while a dynamic link is created by the program as needed

ActiveX is designed to work as an old server, which is nothing more than a program and can be visible in project. While ActiveX DLL is not used by itself, instead, it contains subprograms designed to function and can not be visible in program. Assuming this is your course related, however, reading study materials are more convenient way to gather solid knowledge.

Keep in mind that, before knowing all of these, and if you wanted to be a developer/coder, you must know all the basic things of proper code writing like SDLC/core values of developments etc.
