I thought marketing of 5.4 ended in May 2011?

Marketing, yes -- 05/27/2011 according to IBM's current schedule.

As with most other vendors, IBM stops 'marketing' long before ending 'support. Just a minor shift in focus.

As the IBM Upgrade Planning document in Cwc's answer shows, V5R4 will be supported for at least 12 months plus one day from today.

There is no End-Of-Support date announced for V5R4 yet. Note 1 states:

End of program support date will be announced with at least 12 months notice prior to the effective termination date.

AFAIK, IBM hopes to have Version 8 (or perhaps 7.2) out in 2012.
